General overview

The Government has put a high priority on increased investment in school buildings. Capital investment in schools raises teacher morale, motivates pupils and has a positive impact on pupil achievement. Much has been achieved since 1997 to reduce the urgent backlog of repairs required. The Government has made significant increases in funding available for this purpose and is continuing to do so. It is looking not just to address major repairs, although this is still needed, but also to deliver major improvements to the quality of school accommodation through well-planned investment.

This radical overhaul of the structure of schools in the UK covers all categories of educational establishments, and not just the secondary education tier which is providing the main focus via the ‘Schools for the Future’ programme.
