The ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme

Building Schools for the Future is a major element of the Government’s ambition to renew schools in England and ensure that all children and teachers work in schools that will support the transformation of teaching and learning. It is part of a wider capital investment programme that will reach over £8 billion a year by 2010-11, funding levels which are scheduled to  continue for a period of upto15 years. This annual funding represents a 10 fold increase in government spending on schools per annum over the last 10 years.

Building Schools for the Future (BSF) will transform the way in which education is delivered by providing 21st-century teaching and learning facilities in schools across the country, and intends to see every secondary school rebuilt or refurbished in the next 15 years.

The Building Schools for the Future programme is being facilitated by ‘Partnerships for Schools’, a non departmental public body wholly owned by the Dfes and funded jointly by the Dfes and Partnerships UK. It is their responsibility to ensure that the 3,500 state owned secondary schools meet the government standards as laid out in the programme, along with ensuring that the government meets its’ target to create 200 academies by 2010.
